MOV vs MP4 for App Demos: Which Format to Use
Co-founder, Framy
MOV vs MP4 for app demos — what each format is best for, why MP4 wins for sharing, and how to turn a MOV screen recording into a framed MP4 free with no watermark.

Your Mac and iPhone record in MOV, but most places you post want MP4 — so MOV vs MP4 for app demos comes up the moment you try to share a screen recording. Here's the plain difference, when each wins, and how to end up with a framed MP4 without a separate converter.
The short answer
- MOV is Apple's container. It's what QuickTime and the iOS recorder produce. High quality, great for editing, but not universally accepted online.
- MP4 is the universal container. Every platform, browser, and app takes it. It's the right format for sharing and uploading.
For an app demo you'll post or upload, export MP4. Keep the MOV as your clean source if you want.
Are they really different?
Under the hood they're close — both commonly use H.264 or HEVC video. MOV and MP4 are mostly different wrappers around similar content, which is why converting between them is usually fast and lossless. The practical difference is compatibility: MP4 goes everywhere, MOV sometimes gets rejected or won't preview.
| MOV | MP4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Apple (QuickTime) | Universal standard |
| Compatibility | Mostly Apple ecosystem | Everywhere |
| Best for | Recording, editing source | Sharing, uploading |
| App Store / social | Sometimes unsupported | Supported |
Do you need a converter?
Often not. If you're framing the demo anyway, the framing step can output MP4 for you — no separate conversion tool. That's the simplest path: record MOV, frame it, export MP4. You can put a video in an iPhone mockup and change format in the same pass.
Step-by-step: MOV to framed MP4
- Record your app (QuickTime or the iOS recorder gives you a MOV)
- Open the Framy editor
- Drop in the MOV — it lands inside a real iPhone frame
- Pick the model and ratio
- Export High quality MP4, no watermark
You've converted format and added the device frame in one pass.
Quality tips
- Keep your MOV as the master. Edit and re-export from it if you need changes.
- Export High quality — full canvas detail gives headroom against platform re-compression.
- Don't double-compress. Convert once at high quality rather than re-exporting repeatedly.
Bottom line
MOV is a fine recording and editing format; MP4 is the format to share. For an app demo, export MP4 — and if you're framing the clip in an iPhone shell anyway, you get the MP4 out the other side without a separate converter.
